It’s true. Both True Blood’s Sam Merlotte ( Sam Trammell) and Lafayette Reynolds ( Nelsan Ellis) now have moms!
Lafayette’s mom will be be played by Emmy-winning actress Alfre Woodard.
Ms. Woodard will be guest-starring on Alan Ball’s huge HBO hit “True Blood” as the mother of Lafayette Reynolds (Nelsan Ellis), a cook at Merlotte’s who sold drugs including “V” and got himself abducted for doing so, resulting in his being held and tortured by Viking vampire Eric (Alexander Skarsgård).
Lafayette and Tara (Rutina Wesley) are cousins–so this also gives her another family member to add to her rather smallish clan.

Sam Merlotte’s (Sam Trammell) mom has been cast as well.
Tony winner J Smith Cameron will play the recurring role of Sam’s estranged mother, Melinda.
In addition to her ‘many Broadway roles,’ Cameron has appeared on Law & Order, Six Degrees and K Street. The character descriptions of Sam’s bio-mom Melinda is “dirt-poor, hung-over and trashy-looking.” Prison Break’s Marshall Allman will play her son/Sam’s younger bro.

Although Alan Ball confirmed as long ago as last summer that shapeshifter-wolf Alcide (pronounced ‘Al-cee’) would be a major part of the Season 3 storyline, the casting of the actor to play the pivotal part just got underway today with the release of the following casting notice:
‘ALCIDE: Good-looking, rough-around-the-edges, articulate, heroic, and decent, but not what he seems. He gets along well with Sookie. There’s even an attraction between the two. Very strong recurring.’
True Blood is also searching for a African-American actor to play HOLLIS, an age 40-plus bouncer in a bar. Despite his scary appearance — he resembles an NFL lineman — he’s a nice guy who knows Alcide well. He’s suspicious of Sookie and delivers some unexpected bad news to Alcide about his fiancée, Debbie Pelt.
Finally, Alan Ball is on the lookout for an actor in his 70s to play Arlene’s ‘old-school‘ OB-GYN!
OMG. Arlene’s going to get herself knocked up?! No way! Wait. Maybe this is a result of all the knocking boots she did with Terry Bellefleur in S2 due to the machinations of maenad Maryann(!)
Production on True Blood’s third season got underway last week so stay tuned for lots more casting news.

The cast of HBO’s vampiric sensation True Blood has only been back to work on their third season for a few days, but Rutina Wesley and Alexander Skarsgård say they’re already sinking their teeth into some bloody interesting storylines.
“There’s more of people with different agendas,” Skarsgård – who had a breakout season as his not-always-bad boy vampire Eric emerged as a contender for Sookie Stackhouse’s heart and soul – told TVGuideMagazine.com. “Sam’s got his stuff to deal with, his background and who he is, trying to figure that out. There might be some more tension between the vampire kingdoms and queendoms and they might introduce other creatures than just vampires.”
“There’s a lot of new characters that will be introduced,” confirms Wesley. “We’ve got some werewolves that are coming in. Everyone is back now, so it’ll be interesting to see how Tara deals with everything that happens with the last season. She’s got a lot grieving she has to do, but I have a feeling that someone’s going to come in and sweep her off of her feet. Then we’ve got Sookie there to help her out as well. They’re making a lot of people the focus. That’s the one thing that I love about being on the show – that it’s truly an ensemble. All of us have really good and meaty stuff to
Skarsgård said that Eric’s ancient history is going to be further explored during the season as well. “In Season 2 there was a flashback. We see when Eric was a Viking, and there will be another flashback. We’ll see Eric and someone else as a tag team – I don’t want to reveal from what era, but it’s a couple of really fun scenes.”
“It’s amazing because he’s been around for a thousand years and lived all over the world, so you can put him in any situation in any country,” said Skarsgård. “I want more of the stuff from his earlier days when he was in Scandinavia, during the Viking days. I’d love that because you don’t see much of that in movies or on television from that era – and obviously because I’m from Sweden I’m quite fascinated by it. It’s my heritage, that culture with the Vikings, and so hopefully we’ll get to see a little more of that.”
There are also some guest stars waiting in the wings: Wesley said she’s heard that actor Don Swayze, brother of the late Patrick Swayze, will appear on the show, and Skarsgård says there’s a well-known name who just might be making a visit to Bon Temps. “There’s one that I’m hoping we can get towards the end of Season 3,” he revealed. “It’s not official yet and something I’m pretty excited about – someone that I’d very, very much enjoy working with.

Here is the best news, IMO, and I saved it for last because…it’s a couple days old. It makes me squee though!
Pam is back with a vengeance. The gorgeous and funny Kristin Bauer...
‘Eric’s sidekick Pam on “True Blood” is getting a promotion.
Kristin Bauer, who plays blonde vampire Pam, Eric’s (Alexander Skarsgard) wingwoman at vampire bar Fangtasia, has been promoted to regular on the HBO series.
Bauer had guest starred on Alan Ball’s vampire drama for the first two seasons, appearing in a total of 11 episodes.
Ball recently hinted that may have a meaty story line in store for Pam for Season 3 when she may get into a lesbian relationship.
It’s a busy casting time at “True Blood,” which started production on the third season last week.’

I think it could be hilarious watching Arlene and Terry back to normal, and dealing with the prospect of her being pregnant. It might make the characters more interesting. Alfre Woodard is a good choice for Lafayette’s mom. Both strong actors that will play well off each other. I can’t wait to see who they cast as Alcide the were, and how well thay handle his shifts on screen. Alan Ball has picked some great actors for the show and I hope it continues with Alcide. But it all comes down to Sookie and the cast of characters that will vie for her affection now that Bill is missing.
Yes about Terry and Arlene.
You just know they were not using protection during the several Maryann-induced orgies they participated in.
Yep. It _does_ hinge on ‘Sookie’-Anna Paquin to keep the True Blood anchored. It’s a dream cast so I’m pretty sure they make it easy for her to do.
